What is the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the legal framework that sets the standards that all early years’ providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe.

The Early Years Foundation Stage framework sets out 7 areas of learning and development. These are divided into two groups, known as the ‘Prime areas’ and ‘Specific areas’.

The prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in the 4 specific areas. All 7 areas are listed below with a brief description of the key skills they will learn in each area.

Prime Areas

Physical Development

Moving; managing self care independently; learning about healthy living; using gross motor skills.

Assessment Requirements

We continually assess your child's development; we do this by taking a step back and observing how your child engages in play and interacts with other children and staff. Our observations help us gather enough information to determine a child’s progress in the 7 areas of learning and development displayed above. This allows us to prepare an individual plan to support each child’s development.

We will carry out an assessment of your child’s development in the 3 Prime Areas outlined above between 24-36 months. This is a requirement set out in the EYFS, normally referred to as the ‘Progress check at age two.’

The aim of the assessment is to review a child’s development so both parents and practitioners have a clear picture and appropriate plans can be put in place so the child is supported effectively both in the settings and at home.

Once children turn 5, they will also have another assessment set out in the EYFS to review progress towards the early learning goals which in turn will support their transition to school. This is known as the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile.

Safeguarding & Welfare Requirements

The safeguarding requirements set out what we must do to ensure children are kept safe. These cover Child Protection; vetting checks on staff, staff qualifications, staff:child ratios; data protection; suitable and safe premises; health; Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) and managing behaviour.
